Current Usage of Soulmate

In current usage, "soulmate" usually refers to a romantic partner, with the implication of an exclusive lifelong bond. This is to say, the word is used with more rarity than the terms also associated with 'romantic partner'. The term is a very versatile term, being defined differently by different individuals, as it is related to the concept of love. It commonly holds the connotation of being the strongest bond with another person,romantically, that one can achieve. The term is not used as often as other terms representing the same idea, and this is likely to lead to its perceived rarity in meaning. The definition of it ranges widely, and cannot be pinpointed. It is commonly accepted that one will feel 'complete' once they have found their soul mate, as it is partially in the perceived definition that two souls are meant to unite.

Greek Mythology: Soulmates

Greek Mythology Soul Mate: -In Greek mythology, according to Plato's Symposium, human beings originally consisted of three genders-male, female, and the combination of the two. However, Zeus feared the power of the combined human form, and so cut humans into separate males and females, resulting in a perpetual ache of separation and a longing to regain the completeness by finding one's soul mate. 

According to Aristophanes (a character based on a real contemporary of Plato) "love" is the term describing the yearning and pursuit of each half to re-create the whole, a concept resulting from the split of the original body which featured four legs, four arms, and a head with two faces. Greek mythology shares the soul-mate idea with many other cultures throughout history that have stories to explain the strong energetic connection between two people who often feel more complete with each other, where regular concepts like "friend" or "mate" are not adequate. Terms like "my better half" and "counterpart" indicate similar sentiments. 

Soul Mate Descriptions

1. Reincarnation: Some believe that a soul mate is someone with whom a person has shared other life times through reincarnation. The soul mate could be a friend, business partner, parent, child, sibling, spouse or other family member. These soul mates can be of the same or opposite sex.
2. Other Half: Others believe, like the ancient Greek philosopher Plato, that a soul mate is a person's "other half". This concept was the basis of the movie, The Butcher's Wife where the idea of "split-aparts" searching for one another was explored. People all over the world believe that we are all searching for someone to make us whole and to share our journey of life with.
3. A dictionary definition is: One of two persons compatible with each other in disposition, point of view, or sensitivity. Someone for whom you have a deep affinity. A person temperamentally suited to another.
4. Predestination: The movie Still Breathing examines the thought that people are drawn together as soul mates by destiny or fate and that being with our soul mate is something we have no control over. This idea of predestination and connection even after death between soul mates was also examined in the movie What Dreams May Come
